Pomeranian vs Shih Tzu: Which Breed Is Right for You?
Pomeranian vs Shih Tzu — two fluffy, small, lovable dogs with very different personalities. We compare temperament, grooming, energy, trainability, and more.
Two fluffy, small, undeniably adorable dogs — and two very different personalities. If you're trying to decide between a Pomeranian and a Shih Tzu, you're not alone. It's one of the most common "help me choose" questions I get from people who are just starting to research small dog breeds.
The good news is there's no wrong answer. Both are wonderful dogs. But the right fit depends entirely on your lifestyle, your experience level, and what you're actually looking for in a dog. Let me break it down.

Size and Build
Both breeds are small, but Pomeranians are noticeably tinier. A Pom typically tops out around 3–7 pounds, while a Shih Tzu comes in at 9–16 pounds — nearly double the size.
This matters more than you might think. Pomeranians are more fragile and can be accidentally hurt by small children or rough handling. Shih Tzus are a bit more solid, which makes them a slightly safer choice in households with toddlers.
On the flip side, Poms are easier to carry, take up less space, and are generally cheaper to feed and care for due to their smaller size.
Coat Type and Grooming Needs
These two breeds have completely different coats, and this is often the deciding factor for a lot of people.
Pomeranian coat: Poms have a thick double coat — a soft, dense undercoat with a longer, harsher outer coat that stands away from the body and gives them that signature fluffy look. They shed year-round, with two major blowout seasons per year. You'll need to brush 3–5 times per week, and they benefit from a professional groom every 6–8 weeks.
Shih Tzu coat: Shih Tzus have a long, silky coat that grows continuously, similar to human hair. They're low-shedding (great for allergy sufferers), but if you keep their coat long, it requires daily brushing to prevent tangles. Many Shih Tzu owners opt for a shorter "puppy cut" to make maintenance more manageable.
The trade-off: Poms shed more but don't need daily brushing. Shih Tzus shed less but need more frequent brushing if kept long. Professional grooming costs are similar for both.
Temperament and Personality
This is where these two breeds really diverge.
Pomeranians are bold, curious, energetic, and alert. They have a "big dog in a small body" personality — confident, sometimes bossy, always aware of what's going on around them. They tend to bond closely with one or two people and can be a bit suspicious of strangers. Poms are playful and love to be the center of attention.
Shih Tzus are bred to be companions, and it shows. They're affectionate, outgoing, and generally friendly with everyone — strangers, kids, other dogs. They're famously good-natured and have a reputation for being more laid-back and easygoing than Poms. The name "Shih Tzu" literally translates to "little lion" — but their actual vibe is more "little lap dog."
If you want a lively, spirited little dog with a big personality, Pom all the way. If you want a calm, sociable, everyone's-best-friend companion, Shih Tzu.
Energy Level and Exercise
Pomeranians are surprisingly energetic for their size. They need two to three short walks per day, plus mental stimulation. Left without enough activity, they become bored and vocal. They love to play and can do well in dog sports like agility.
Shih Tzus are moderate-energy dogs. They enjoy walks and playtime, but they're equally happy lounging with you on the couch. They were bred as palace lap dogs for Chinese royalty — relaxing is basically in their DNA. One or two short walks a day is usually sufficient.
If you're active and want a dog who'll enthusiastically join your life, Poms keep up well. If you want a chill companion who's perfectly content with a more relaxed pace, Shih Tzu.
Trainability
Both breeds are smart — and both can be stubborn.
Pomeranians are highly intelligent and pick up commands quickly. But they have an independent streak and can decide they'd rather do things their own way. Positive reinforcement training works well. Early socialization and consistent training are essential, especially around barking and leash manners.
Shih Tzus are also trainable but are known to be a bit less eager to please than some breeds. They can be mildly stubborn, but they respond well to patient, reward-based training. Housetraining can take longer with Shih Tzus — it's a known characteristic of the breed.
Health Concerns
Both breeds are prone to some specific health issues worth knowing about.
Pomeranians can be prone to: luxating patella (loose kneecap), collapsed trachea, dental disease (their small mouths crowd their teeth), and a condition called Pomeranian Alopecia X (a hormonal coat loss condition). They can also be sensitive to heat due to their thick coats.
Shih Tzus are prone to: brachycephalic syndrome (breathing issues due to their flat face), hip dysplasia, eye problems (their large eyes are vulnerable to injury and infection), and dental disease.
Both breeds benefit from regular vet checkups, good dental hygiene, and appropriate diet. The Shih Tzu's breathing issues are worth knowing about before you commit — in hot weather or during exercise, flat-faced dogs need extra monitoring.
Which Is Better For...
Apartments? Both are excellent apartment dogs. Poms require a bit more management around barking; Shih Tzus tend to be quieter neighbors.
Families with young children? Shih Tzu has the edge — they're more tolerant of handling and less fragile.
Families with older kids or adults only? Either breed works beautifully.
First-time dog owners? Both are manageable, but Shih Tzus are often recommended as slightly more forgiving for beginners due to their easygoing temperament.
Allergy sufferers? Shih Tzu is the better choice — low-shedding coat means fewer allergens.
People who love grooming their dog? Pom's fluffy coat is extremely satisfying to brush and maintain.
People who want a quieter dog? Shih Tzu is generally calmer and barks less.
The Bottom Line
Both the Pomeranian and the Shih Tzu make wonderful companions. If you want a spirited, fluffy, bold little dog who's deeply devoted to you, a Pom might be your match. If you want a gentle, friendly, easygoing lap dog who gets along with everyone, a Shih Tzu might suit you better.
Either way, you're signing up for years of fluff, love, and probably more dog hair on your clothes than you anticipated.
