Meet Tofu β€” The Pom Behind PomGuide

When I brought Tofu home, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing.

I'd wanted a Pomeranian for years. I'd done the β€œare Poms right for me?” research. I thought I was ready. And then this tiny, fluffy creature was actually in my apartment, staring at me, and I realized I had no clue how to take care of him.

The first few days were a blur of questions. What do I feed him? How often? How do you brush a dog with that much fur without it turning into a disaster?

Then Tofu started losing his fur.

It came out in patches. I panicked. I spent hours searching for answers and landed in a two-hour Reddit thread that left me more confused than when I started. Eventually I learned Tofu had Pomeranian alopecia β€” a condition that affects Poms specifically and that most general dog resources don't even mention. He went through it. We got through it. But it took way longer than it should have to even understand what was happening to him.

Every time I searched for something specific about Pomeranians, I'd get forum posts with conflicting answers, generic small-dog guides that weren't really about Poms, or dense veterinary articles that assumed I had a medical degree.

So I did what any anxious new dog parent does: I researched obsessively. For months.

I pieced it all together β€” the grooming routines, what to feed and what to avoid, how to read Tofu's health signals, how to handle the quirks that are very specifically Pomeranian, and yes, everything about alopecia that I wish someone had told me on day one.

Tofu is healthy and happy now, full coat and all. But I kept thinking about all the new Pom owners going through the exact same thing β€” the late-night searching, the uncertainty, the feeling that you're one Google result away from being a bad dog parent.

That's why I built PomGuide. Every guide here is what I wish I'd had from the start β€” clear, practical, written for real Pom owners, not vets.

A note on Tofu: he has very strong opinions about his brush, will absolutely steal your spot on the couch the second you stand up, and remains completely unbothered by both of these facts.
